Why do I need help with my property taxes?

Can my action increase the amount due?
Since the Tax Commission has no authority to increase the assessment, your tax assessment can only be reduced as a result of filing with the tax commission. (TITLE 21 OF THE RULES OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK which contains the
TAX COMMISSION RULES OF PRACTICE AND PROCEDURE states in Chapter 4 Section 4-01 :
“The tax commission may not increase an assessed valuation”.

The city assesses my property much less than the market value – isn’t it “waste of time” to appeal?
No. the correlation between the real market value of your property and the “market value” appearing on your bills is insignificant. The city has obligation under the applicable laws to comply with certain procedures and applications in determining your assessment. For example, compelling the taxpayer to pay more than his due share of the aggregate tax (that is, the levy on all taxpayers in the entire district) will be considered injustice and discriminatory assessments.
